’Tis the season to think about gifts. Whether you’re globetrotting by yourself, visiting family or receiving guests, we’ve got great ideas for presents and stocking stuffers, plus tips to make sure the holidays don’t cause you extra stress.

Light & Easy

If you’re trying to travel light during the busy holiday season, think of gifts that won’t weigh you down or skip buying them until you arrive at your destination. Some options to consider:

  • Accompany kids to a local toy store and let them choose a gift
  • Pack gift cards instead of gifts
  • Pre-order gifts online or from a catalog and have them delivered
  • Sponsor a festive dinner out for family & friends
  • Treat everyone to a fun holiday outing (such as ice skating or bowling)

Wait to Wrap

If you’re flying with gifts, don’t wrap them—not only does paper tear easily, but security may require you unwrap packages to check the contents. If you want to give a wrapped gift, wait until you get to your destination to make it festive. Pack a gift bag and tissue paper, or pre-measured wrapping paper (place it in a flat luggage pocket for safekeeping) and ribbon. Don’t forget the tape. If you run out of time, you can buy wrapping supplies once you arrive.

The Extra Bag – A Gift That Keeps Giving

Savvy travelers pack an extra bag for the souvenirs and gifts they find on their journeys. During the holidays, you can use an extra bag to carry gifts for others on your way to your destination, then repack it with the gifts you received on your way home. Lightweight, foldable bags like our Reisenthal Packable Travel Tote make packing easy by crushing down to paperback size. The Carried Away Lightweight Tote fits easily at the bottom of a suitcase and doubles as a fashionable purse. Travel totes also make great gifts themselves. Gifts to Make Travel More Comfortable

Everyone needs to hit the road at some point. Whether it’s by land, sea or air, traveling with creature comforts makes it a more enjoyable experience. Think of gifts that will enhance the travel experience of friends and family:

Stocking Stuffers

If you want to pack gifts without adding baggage weight, think small and light—as in stocking stuffers. Here are a few of our favorites:

Valuable Gifts

If you’re traveling with gifts or anything of value, do not put them in your checked luggage. Pack gifts and valuables in your carry-on, or have them shipped in advance with package tracking and insurance. If you’re flying, choose a carry-on that will fit in the overhead bin and doesn’t run the risk of being checked at the gate because it’s too big. Surround fragile gifts with bubble wrap and place them among the soft items in your bag for extra cushioning.
