Donegal Tweed Sport Coat 3.9 5 5 7
Best tweed jacket I own The blue was more intense than I would have chosen at first, but it looks great and has so much handwoven color in the fabric that its richness is obvious to anyone taking a close look. I have had many compliments. It was warm in an icy downpour in a Northern Ireland spring and not hot in a Virginia spring. It held up to a torrential rain in Virginia. It never looked unpressed after either soaking. I can't say enough about the quality and wearability of this sport coat. Sadly, I have lost weight and need a smaller size but only the grey is available to replace this wonderful blue jacket. If it becomes available again I will snap it up instantly in my new size. Great tweed, but lining doesn't hold up Despite my merely "low-average" rating, I will almost certainly purchase another of these jackets. I travel quite a bit for a non-businessman-- I've just returned to the US after four years in Portugal-- and have discovered that the extra and hidden pockets are very useful (European wallets require deeper pockets than American ones, as both Euro bill sizes and ID cards are larger, and while Portugal is quite safe, some other European countries abound in pickpockets, as is true in Southeast Asia, parts of South America, and even some American cities), and I really appreciate the traditional Donegal tweed-- not the blue, but the traditional blend. I also have two other similar TravelSmith jackets... and enjoy them as well. But... while I like these jackets and still wear them, I have had to replace linings three times (happily Portugal has good and inexpensive tailors). If you carry a couple of pens in the inside breast pocket, as is normal, the corner of the pocket will begin to wear away after just a few months. The other pockets wear out to the degree they're used-- and as there's no point in unused pockets, with frequent use the liner looks like it was attacked by rabid muskrats within a year-- while the tweed continues to look impeccable. I would love to see these jackets made with better quality liners. The only pocket I never wore out was the "Super-duper-secret Pocket" that TravelSmith wouldn't even tell you where was until after you purchased it and it arrived, and for which I never did find a use (and no, I won't mention its location). [As an idea, given the popularity of Kindles and Nooks, an inner pocket of the size and strength to hold one would be a great addition to your line!] February 16, 2012
the antidote to shiny suits I had a hard time convincing my husband to try a "tweed". To him that meant old men, Scottish highlands, and (horror) leather elbow patches. If I'd shown him this coat online, he would have vetoed it out of hand. So instead it showed up magically in his closet! The color is a beautiful blue. Not "too" blue. As another review said- there are tiny red and cream flecks in the slightly thick, rough blue weave. It makes it interesting, and believe me, women will be intrigued. It came out of the shipping box with only minor creases that fluffed out overnight. My guy wears a 46 long, and frequently has a problem with a center vent gaping. This coat fit well enough around his middle without looking like a tent to allow the center vent only a slight pull. The shoulders fit beautifully and the neck in the back lies flat. I paired the jacket with a tiny blue check shirt and a yellow tie and he looks ammmaaaazzzing. This jacket would have been worth it at full price. Very pleased that we can actually buy something through the mail and it fits! February 11, 2012
A Few Surprises Like most TravelSmith jackets, this is true to size and fits like a glove. Two surprises, however: there are some minor flecks of red in the pattern I didn't expect; and the feel of the wool is a bit rougher than usual. All in all, a good value and reliable travel item, but not exactly what I expected. October 2, 2010
Excellent Choice! O.k. so if you're paying attention, I totally panned the men's raincoat ref: "a glorified poncho with panache" but I have no hesitation to insist that if you are looking for a classic blazer this is the one! It looks great! It feels great! And the price is more than on the money. I took this jacket out of the box and I have worn it every day to work ever since. It looks great with a classic button down stripped shirt and shield tie and I have not tried it yet but I'm sure it'll look like dynamite with a black turtleneck. Men, get this jacket before they're out of stock! March 28, 2010
