Dual-Voltage Beverage Heater 5 5 1 1
Definitely Works! Must buy for all travelers. First of all, I use amazon to buy many of my travel accessories, but I love Travel Smith, because they have very competitive prices, great selection, and I love their no quibble return policy also. Well, I checked out this item on amazon and I noticed there were many unfavorable reviews, and I definitely needed a unit that worked in Europe and USA and I discovered that many of these immersion heaters are not designed to work outside the USA, but this one DOES, and its a dual voltage model. I placed it in a ceramic cup filled with water, and had the immersion heater balancing on the "plastic spike" that can help keep the unit protruding out of your cup, by making sure the lip of your cup is inserted between the metal heater and the plastic spike. This heater will re-heat a beverage within a few minutes (less than 5 minutes). It will heat water to make coffee definitely within 15 minutes, and will boil after 15 minutes. Personally, I wouldn't even try to boil water with this heater, as it may become too hot. But, I've used it until bubbles start to rise to the top of the water with faster progression and then I unplug it. By reading all the reviews on other websites, I didn't make the mistakes other folks have, such as plugging this unit in the wall socket WITHOUT having the metal heater already inserted in the liquid. Doing that will render this unit useless and blow a interior fuse. So, my only advice to anyone purchasing this product is to insert it in water BEFORE you even think about plugging it up. Also, its designed for beverages and not food. This heater is a must have for all travelers who drink tea, coffee or hot cocoa. You can simply pack ziplock bags of coffee, tea bags and packs of cocoa for your trip, fill up a cup of water, insert the heater, and find an outlet to plug it up (even at an airport), and have your own hot beverage in under 15 minutes. I keep a small GSI stainless cup/pot in my carry-on backpack which will work great for this purpose. This immersion heater is made in China, but I find the quality good, and it has a polarized plug and decent electrical cord. If you're using this item on a 12 volt system with an inverter, it uses about 7 amps of power. Just follow the directions exactly as the instruction booklet outlines and you'll have no issues with your unit at all. Definitely worth the money. Thanks Travel Smith! February 20, 2013
