Travelon Underseater Carry-On Bag 3.8 5 60 62
Field tested and not-so-good: dreams dashed I've been looking forward to having this bag for quite a while and thought it strange that opinions varied so widely. Must be a quality control issue at the plant, I thought. But it's really not well designed. I'm returning mine. The bag itself seems to be average to good quality construction. HOWEVER, all the wonderful pockets (except the water bottle) open inward and there is almost no give to the fabric. So -- a magazine or tall bottle or Kindle, for example -- do not fit very well in the pockets. And certainly not when you try to zip the bag closed as the outside front pockets curve AROUND the main compartment. So the available packing space is very small. It's hard for me to believe someone packed for a trip of several days and got everything in. The bag looks good and I really wanted it to work but it just doesn't. The tote bag is stiff, the handles are too short for me to pull the bag up against my body under my arm, and the very light wear of one day at a conference produced a tear in the side of the bag. Perfect for both my moms I purchased this roll-a-board for my 80-something mother after a disastrous trip when her beloved carry-on that was not wheeled got the best of her. She continued to travel with it until she succumbed to cancer. After her passing we gave it to my husband's 80-something mother who loves it as much as my mom did. The primary reason for their delight in the bag is that they can manage it without a struggle. It really does hold quite a lot so it is a boon for all those necessities and a bit of clothing "trip insurance" if your checked baggage goes missing for a day or two. The tote has not bee all that popular since it can get pretty darned heavy. Additionally for our petite moms, the bag is so large it nearly drags the floor! Both our moms were/are regular travelers taking 3-4 trips a year including an international one here and there. The luggage has stood up well for 5 years with that schedule. It does show wear, particularly around the zippers so I don't think would do well long-term for a frequent traveler. It is modestly priced compared to a lot of luggage so replacing it every 100,000 miles or so might be an option. September 29, 2010
Flimsy Zippers Breaking While I like the fact that this bag is small enough to carry my essentials, roll along, and fit under my seat, it has some issues with cheap zippers. After using my bag for maybe half a dozen times, the back of a zipper just broke off. When I examined the pieces, the back looks like a small piece of PLASTIC--major functional design flaw! Since it was a 2-zipper flap, I still had one that could be used to close it. One trip later, the zipper on the tote bag did the same thing! Lest you think that it was a stress issue from overstuffing the bags, let me say that these bags were NOT overfilled. This company needs to upgrade their zippers--they look sturdy on the outside, but when you look at the backside of the zipper, it's a piece of junk. I have another bag which is similar, but a bit larger and by another company which I have been using for dozens and dozens of trips and has held up fantastically. As much as I like the colors and pockets on this one, I will NOT be buying any more for myself or my family members. It would not be worth the price if it were half of what it is listed for, because of the zipper problem. I do believe that Travelsmith should be addressing this issue with the manufacturer, as many people won't bother to write a review and therefore we probably represent a much larger segment of customers. Take Duct Tape With You A major zipper broke on the first day of a three week trip to Central Asia. I flapped around until I found some duct tape in Uzbekistan. The bag was replaced. A side zipper broke last week on another trip. The suitcase is now at the Luggage Repair shop having the zipper fixed for $27.00. When I return from my next trip I'll send the bag back for a refund. Too bad, because the size is perfect. You just can't trust the zippers and you can't pack the bag very full as pulling on the zippers breaks them. April 1, 2011
OK with reservations I have had this bag for over two years and use it quite often. I particularly like the large compartment that isn't subdivided by trying to tell me where to put what. I like that the bag does fit easily under the seat in front of me except maybe not on the aisle seat. The water bottle holder doesn't hold my stainless steel bottle which is a bit fatter than the usual plastic bottles. The zipper pulls came off immediately - quite an annoyance. I will be ordering the "Spinner" since I know that four wheels are better than two. I also consider the Spinner to be a better value with its included tote. November 29, 2010
Pretty Good I've had this for three years. The rolling tote is great. I haven't had problems zipping it up and using the pockets at the same time, but I never pack the main compartment tightly. The pockets are great. They really help organize things. The telescoping handle works, but is a bit flimsy... it flexes from side to side. The shoulder tote is large but the straps are very uncomfortable when the tote is full. They cut into your shoulder if you have it on your shoulder, and they cut into your hand if you're holding it by hand. The strap for attachment to the rolling tote is thin and doesn't keep the shoulder tote in place. It'll swing off whenever you take a corner. Finally, one of the corner seams on the shoulder tote has started to come apart. I really don't like the shoulder tote. This product is a good value for the price. November 29, 2010
not worth the money I am so disappointed because on first brush I really liked this product. The size and color are great. But I have had trouble with the flimsiness of the product. The handle pulls apart easily making it difficult to use. The zippers get stressed easily making them pull open. Not worth the money -- :( October 5, 2011
Zippers separated when packed This morning I had just finished packing my new bacg for my trip. I noticed that when I filled the pocket compartments inside the bag, my clothing would not fit in the main part of the baggage because the filled pockets took up all the room. After rearranging my clothing for the third time, I zipped it all up and the zippers separated and opened up. When I finally got them opened and tried to rearrange things again to take pressure off the zippers....the zippers would not move. Needless to say...I removed all the items, repacked in my old bag and off to the airport I will go with my old bag. July 19, 2010
